How to grow an SMS list without annoying people
Ask for the phone number as a second step after the email, explain exactly what people will receive and how often, and give them a clear reason to say yes.

A large SMS list is only valuable if people actually want your texts. Here is how to grow one that stays subscribed.
Ask in two steps
Collect the email first, then ask for the phone number on the next screen of the same sign-up form. People who just gave their email are already saying yes, and you keep everyone who skips the second step.
Say what they will get
Be specific next to the phone field:
- what you will send (early access, restocks, order updates);
- how often (for example “2–4 texts a month”);
- that they can reply STOP at any time.
Clear expectations lower unsubscribes later.
Give a reason
A small extra on top of the email offer works well: early access to drops, a free gift, or SMS-only restock alerts.
Other places to ask
- Checkout: an unticked box for order and delivery updates by SMS.
- Post-purchase page: “Want a text when your order ships?”
- Back-in-stock forms: people who want a product are happy to give a number for it.
Stay compliant
Always use explicit consent, keep proof of opt-in, and follow the rules of every country you send to. Your SMS platform will help, but the responsibility is yours.
