Post-purchase journeys: turning a first order into a second
Thank customers, help them use the product well, ask for a review once it has arrived, and only then suggest what to buy next. The second order comes from a good first experience.

Most brands work hard for a first order and then go quiet, or send the same promotions as to everyone else. The weeks after a first purchase are the best moment to earn a second one.
The journey, step by step
- Thank you (right after the order): a personal note, not just the receipt.
- While it ships: what to expect, how to track it, and a tip to get the most out of the product.
- After delivery: a short “how to use / care for it” email.
- Review request (about a week after delivery): one question, one click.
- Next best product: a suggestion based on what they bought, not your newest arrival.
Make it about them
Use the product they bought in every email. A customer who bought a gold necklace should not receive a guide to silver rings.
The best cross-sell feels like advice from someone who remembers what you bought.
Time it to the product
The right moment for the second order depends on what you sell. Consumables need a reminder around the time they run out; gifts and fashion need inspiration closer to the next occasion. Look at when your repeat customers usually come back and send the suggestion just before that.
Measure the right thing
Track the share of first-time buyers who place a second order within 60 or 90 days. It tells you more about your retention than open rates ever will.
