Abandoned cart emails: timing, tone and what to test

Send the first reminder within a few hours, keep the tone helpful rather than pushy, and save any discount for the last email. Then test timing before you test design.

Someone added a product to their cart and left. They were interested, so the job of the abandoned cart flow is to remove what stopped them, not to shout.

A simple three-email structure

  1. Reminder (2–4 hours later): show the product, the price and one clear button back to the cart.
  2. Answer doubts (next day): shipping, returns, sizing or reviews. Whatever your customers ask most.
  3. Last nudge (day 2 or 3): if you use an incentive, use it here, not in email 1.

Keep the tone human

“You forgot something!” is fine once. After that, write like a helpful shop assistant: Still thinking it over? Here is what other customers asked before buying.

Respect the inbox

  • Exit people the moment they buy.
  • Don’t send the full flow again if they abandon a second cart the same week.
  • Use the same sender name as the rest of your emails so it is instantly recognised.

What to test

Test timing first, then subject lines, then the offer. Design changes usually matter less than getting the message in front of people at the right moment.
