Welcome flows that sell: what to send in the first 7 days
Send 4–5 emails in the first week: a warm welcome, your brand story, social proof, your best sellers and a reason to buy now. Each email should have one job.

A new subscriber is never more interested in your brand than in the first few days. A good welcome flow uses that attention to turn a sign-up into a first order, without sounding desperate.
Give every email one job
The most common mistake is putting everything into the first email: discount, story, best sellers and social links. Split it up instead:
- Welcome (right away): thank them, deliver what you promised (a code or a guide) and set expectations for what comes next.
- Your story (day 1): why the brand exists and what makes the product different.
- Proof (day 3): reviews, photos from real customers, or press mentions.
- Best sellers (day 5): three products, not thirty. Make choosing easy.
- Reason to act (day 7): a reminder that the welcome offer ends soon.
Stop the flow when they buy
Exit anyone who places an order and move them into your post-purchase journey. Nothing feels more careless than a “complete your first order” email the day after someone bought.
Write the welcome flow as if one person signs up at a time, because that is how they read it.
What to test first
- Subject lines of email 1: it has the highest open rate of anything you send.
- Offer vs. no offer: some brands sell just as well with free shipping or a gift.
- Timing of email 2: the next morning often works better than one hour later.
Start simple, measure revenue per recipient, and improve one email at a time.
